A Mother’s Story

My son Dan was born with a rare genetic disease that causes non-cancerous tumors to grow on vital organs. It also can bring about seizures which presented in Dan’s case. When he was two years old and receiving periodic hospital treatment for seizures, a CAT scan was performed and revealed that one of these tumors had wrapped around Dan’s spinal cord. There was no choice. A risky surgery on this delicate child would be required to remove the tumor. The surgery would be lengthy, maybe up to 14 hours, but left unattended, in all likelihood Dan would become a paraplegic.

We had to travel out of state for the operation. We were blessed that the father of a friend lived near the hospital and welcomed my husband and me to stay in his home for as long as required. We packed our bags and gratefully moved in with this Good Samaritan while our other three children remained at home with their grandparents.

Danny had undergone numerous tests, x-rays, and scans leading up to his day for surgery. I am sure the tumor on his spine had been viewed from every conceivable angle. All along the way, my husband and I were continuously praying, sometimes not even knowing what to pray for, but trusting in the Lord to deliver a favorable outcome.

We arrived at the hospital on the day prior to the operation so that final preparations could be made for surgery and final views could be taken of the complex intertwining of the spinal cord and the tumor. We were praying while waiting for Dan to be taken to the operating room.

What came next was an exuberant young doctor bursting into the room excitedly announcing the results of the latest scans. “You’ll never believe it, you’ll never believe it,” he said, “it’s a miracle, the tumor is gone!” In fact, we could believe it, and at that moment we could not stop giving thanks and praising Jesus for answering our prayers.

It was a teaching hospital and soon the room was filled with seven doctors as the group made its morning rounds. They were astonished, as this outcome was definitely not what they were expecting. They realized that this cure was something totally beyond themselves. I could then testify to them that we had prayed without ceasing. We were grateful, but not surprised by this miraculous outcome. The Lord got all the glory!

Dan, by the way, has grown up and I am proud to report, that he was led to a Bible college where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biblical counseling. Given his miraculous healing as a child… it somehow seems fitting he would be led to such a calling.
